Trichiasis is the medical name for a condition characterized by misdirected eyelashes. These eyelashes typically direct inward and brush against the eye. It can lead to permanent damage of the cornea and vision loss if left untreated for prolonged period. Symptoms of trichiasis include:
- Eye irritation and/or pain
- Redness
- Blurry vision
- Excessive tearing or discharge
- Sensitivity to light
Treatment for trichiasis depends on the number of eyelashes involved. For temporary relief, the eyelashes can be plucked with a forcep in the office, but the misdirected lashes generally grow back in 4-6 weeks. For recurrent trichiasis, permanent removal of the affected eyelashes using a special radiofrequency device is recommended. For more widespread or severe trichiasis, corrective eyelid surgery may be necessary and more effective.
