If your upper eyelids impede your vision or give you a sleepy, aged look, oculofacial plastic surgeon Dr. Laura Phan can help. Learn more about droopy eyelid surgery at our Saratoga, California practice and discover how treating ptosis (drooping) can offer both functional and cosmetic benefits.

Is Droopy Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

Patients looking to open their eyes wider and rejuvenate sleepy eyes may be candidates for ptosis surgery (droopy eyelid surgery). Ptosis surgery enlarges the opening of the eye by tightening the eyelid muscle, thereby increasing muscle tension to lift the eyelid up more. This procedure is primarily performed for cosmetic purposes; however, it may also be done for medically necessary reasons to improve a patient’s comfort or range of vision.

Ptosis repair is often combined with blepharoplasty to further optimize the aesthetic outcome. Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and, to a lesser degree, fat. Dr. Phan will create a personalized treatment plan for you and help you determine which procedure is best for you.

What Happens During Droopy Eyelid Surgery?

Droopy eyelid surgery can be done in our in-office operating room with local anesthesia and oral sedation or at the surgery center under intravenous sedation, depending on the patient’s comfort level with surgery.

This procedure may involve an external incision on the eyelid crease or an internal one on the underside of the eyelid. Dr. Phan will discuss which approach is most appropriate for you at your consultation. During the surgery, she will shorten and tighten the eyelid muscles and have you sit upright so she can evaluate your lid height, contour, and symmetry as you look in different directions.

What To Expect After Droopy Eyelid Surgery

Although healing rates vary between individuals, most patients can expect the following during their recovery timeline:

  • Days 1 to 3: Stay home and apply ice to reduce bruising and swelling.
  • Day 7: You may resume exercise, bending, and heavy lifting.
  • Days 7 to 10: Sutures are removed, and you can return to work.
  • Day 14: You may resume wearing makeup.
  • Months 1 to 3: The muscles heal and regain their strength.
  • Months 2 to 3: Final results are visible once swelling resolves and scarring fades.

Dr. Phan may also recommend nonsurgical enhancements with the following:

Although surgery can significantly rejuvenate the face, Dr. Phan is a firm believer that the best, most long-lasting results require consistent maintenance with physician-directed treatments. Dr. Phan will design a treatment plan specific to your needs so you can achieve your ideal look.
