Dermal fillers are safe, effective, and long-lasting treatments for facial contouring, fine lines, grooves, and volumizing. The procedure is quick, and there is no significant recovery time. While there are different types of dermal fillers, Dr. Phan prefers hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for their effectiveness and safety profile, as well as for their reversibility with hyaluronidase if the result is not to one’s expectation.
3-months post Morpheus8 to face and 2-months post bilateral PDO threads to mid and lower face, Botox to forehead and glabella, Restylane dermal filler to glabella and nose, and chemical peel for tighter, smoother, and even tone appearance (no make up) Read More
2-weeks post Restylane and Juvederm Ultra Plus dermal filler injections to bilateral tear troughs and nasolabial and melolabial grooves for subtle plumpier skin
Dermal fillers can be injected almost any where on the face.
For facial contouring, Dr. Phan likes to place JUVÉDERM® Voluma® along the cheekbone, browbone, jaw, and chin to enhance facial bone structures. She also likes to use Voluma to build the nasal bridge and contour the nose. This is known as liquid rhinoplasty. Voluma can also be placed in the temples where there is volume loss and thus scalloping of the temple. Besides Voluma, Restylane® Lyft and RHA® 4 may be used in these areas.
For facial grooves and lines, Dr. Phan uses Restylane, JUVÉDERM, and RHA products, depending on the location and severity. In the tear troughs (nasojugular) grooves, where the skin is thinnest, Dr. Phan likes to use JUVÉDERM Volbella® or RHA Redensity™.
For more significant hollowing there, Dr. Phan uses Restylane. She also likes to use Volbella and RHA Redensity in very fine lines. For mild grooves, Dr. Phan uses JUVÉDERM Ultra or RHA 2. For more moderate grooves, Dr. Phan uses JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus or RHA 3. For deep grooves, Dr. Phan places Restylane Lyft or RHA 4 in the deeper dermis and layers one of the other dermal fillers on top. For areas where there is more movement, such as around the mouth, Dr. Phan may use Restylane Refyne for finer lines and Defyne for deeper lines.
For lip enhancement, Dr. Phan uses Volbella or RHA Redensity to inflate thin lips and JUVÉDERM Ultra or RHA 2 to enhance the contour and volume of the lips. On rare occasions, Dr. Phan uses RHA 3. Ideally, the center of the upper lip, called the Cupid’s bow, dips down between two columns that extend up toward the nose, and the lower lip is pouty in the center with two pillows.
How are fillers administered?
Topical numbing cream is applied for 20 to 30 minutes before the product is carefully injected under the skin using an ultra-fine needle. After the injections, the skin may be gently massaged to optimize contouring. To increase the comfort of the procedure, most fillers are pre-mixed with lidocaine, a numbing agent, in addition to the topical numbing cream.
Meet the Face Behind LaFace

She has trained under world-renowned experts in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery and is one of only a few surgeons in her area with this specialist skillset. After the treatment, the area may be pink with tiny injection marks. Patients may have differing degrees of swelling, depending on the site treated and the amount of products used. Bruising may occur. Bruises generally last a few days to a week and vary in severity and duration between different treatment sessions.
Patients with thin skin or a tendency to bruise may use Arnica for three days before and a week after the injection. If possible, the patient should sleep on their back that night. Makeup can be applied immediately as needed. If the area around the mouth is treated, dental work should be delayed 2 to 3 weeks to limit stretching of that area.
When will I see the results?
The results are immediate. However, it typically takes a couple of days to see the full improvement as any redness and swelling resolve.
How do I prepare for treatment?
Patients should avoid Aspirin, other NSAIDS (i.e., Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, and Aleve), St. John’s Wort, fish oil, flax seed, ginseng, garlic, or ginkgo supplements, and high-dose vitamin E for 10 days prior to and 1 day after treatment. This will help to minimize bruising. Patients who have a history of cold sores should inform Dr. Phan before receiving injections around the mouth. Prophylactic anti-viral medication may be prescribed three days before and one week after the injection to avoid the recurrence of cold sores.
How long do fillers last?
The duration of your results depends on the area treated and the type of filler. Restylane Lyft, JUVÉDERM, and JUVÉDERM Volbella may last 12 months. RHA fillers last at least 12 months. Voluma can last 24 months. With each additional treatment, the duration increases. The art and expertise of your doctor are paramount when it comes to choosing the best fillers for your needs and maintaining long-term satisfaction with your results.
